“My nightmares may happen, there’s no way to make them stop…for try as I may, to have a dream, only my nightmares, still remain.” – Vickie D. Capps/ Fire!”
That was the call that I woke to that night. A natural panic set in as I jumped out of bed. My husband, Tet, wasn’t there. The smell of smoke filled my lungs as I tried to find my way to the door blindly.
“Tet!” I called, choking and hardly able to breath, “Tet!”
No reply came as I entered the hall. I remembered the rest of my family and ran to my sister’s room. In Basankh’s room, I found her huddled in the corner, hiding from the flames. Her eyes were shut tight and she sat with her hands over her ears. Her face was covered with tears.
“Basankh!”
I bent down and picked her up. She was so small and light. Fragile. The 6 year old wrapped her arms around my neck and clung to my body. I noticed that some of her beautiful black hair had been singed off.
“Sarai…” Basankh cried on my shoulder, “I’m scared!”
“I know sweetie,” I said, pulling her closer, “Hang on.”
I ran with her in my arms, dodging the flames. When we made it outside, the fresh night air hit us. My mother and step-father ran to me and Basankh. I let my mother take her from my arms. I glanced around to see if everyone was out. Sekankh, my older sister, stood with our neighbors and their family. Everyone was there, except…Tet.
“Where’s Tet?” I asked, panicked beyond reason.
“He was out here,” My step-father answered, “I think he went back inside to see if everyone was out…”
I heard one of our neighbors shout “Look!” and turned to the direction that they were pointing. Tet was helping our slave, Shinsei, out of the burning building. He held one of Shinsei’s arms around his neck and braced the slave with his other hand. I was relieved to see them safe. Until the roof caved in. Until the building collapsed on them. Then my relief turned to pain. I fell to my knees and my world turned to darkness. I saw but couldn’t see. I wept but shed no tears. I could breath but was gasping for breath.
I fell into welcomed oblivion…

Sarai woke from her past gasping for air. A cold sweat beaded her forehead and her hair stuck to her back. Once her nerves settled, she closed her eyes and thought about her dream. Actually, it was a nightmare. A flashback. A different one played every night for the last 5,000 years, down to the last detail. Some were good and some were bad.
Sarai was born in Egypt. She had black hair that came to her shoulders, dark brown eyes, and dark brown skin that had lightened over the years, though she was still fairly tanned. The memory of her childhood was sketchy. She had an older sister named Sekankh and her mother, Naut, was pregnant. When Sarai’s father died her younger sister, Basankh, was born. By age 12, Sarai had become a dancer in the Pharaoh’s court. A year after she became married to one of the palace guards, Tet. Naut had also married.
Tet was three years older than Sarai at the time. At first, she didn’t like him much. He had a charming attitude that made her change her mind. The more she got to know him, the more she realized that she loved him.
“I still do.” She told herself before falling back to sleep.

Uh…hi there! I’m the authoress of this fic. I had to redo this first chapter because I got stuck….sad isn’t it? Anywho, hope you enjoyed it. Suggestions, comments (good and bad), and corrections on my work are welcomed. So please review!
“Slavery was common in Egypt and the entire Near East. An Egyptian slave could own property, inherit land, marry whom he wished, and have servants. The crown, temples, and free Egyptian had control over the slave-population, which in part consisted of prisoners of war, as well as native Egyptians. According to scholars, the pyramids of the Old Kingdom were not mainly built by slave labor, even though various movies produced by Hollywood would have it so.” –Who’s Who in Egyptian Mythology by Anthony S. Mercatante
Sarai entered her new classroom 15min. before it started. The teacher, Mr. Michi, looked up from the papers he was grading.
“Good morning! You must be Miss Yamaguchi.” Mr. Michi had a soft, firm voice. He held out his hand.
“Nice to meet you Mr. Michi.” She shook his hand and sat down at one of the desks near the window.
Mr. Michi continued to grade papers. He looked like he was about 40. His hair was a light brown with the exception of his grey sideburns. He had soft brown eyes and he wore reading glasses on the bridge of his nose. He looked like someone you could tell your secrets to and he’d understand. Not that she would tell my secrets to anyone.
Sarai looked out the window. It was a lovely day. The sun shined down on the courtyard and a slight breeze ruffled the trees. Other students were playing basketball, or sitting around talking amongst themselves. A couple of them were rushing to finish last night’s homework. Some just sat there and read.
“Good morning Mr. Michi!” A voice said.
“Good morning!” said another voice.
“Good morning Yugi, Tea!” Mr. Michi replied, “Why don’t you two introduce yourselves to our new student?”
Sarai turned her attention from the window to the two people that just walked in. One was a little shorter than her. She had light brown hair and matching eyes. The other one was very short. He had spiked, multi-colored hair and soft purple eyes.
“Hi, I’m Tea Gardner.” The taller one smiled.
“And I’m Yugi Moto.” The short one, Yugi looked familiar to Sarai but she couldn’t quiet figure it out.
“I’m Mariette Yamaguchi.” Sarai introduced “herself”. The bell rang and Yugi and Tea took their seats on the other side of the room. Other students started filing in.
Sarai had lied about her name. She’d been alive for 5,000 years and didn’t age at all. Every couple years she moved from one place to another and changed names so no one could find her. She didn’t want anyone to find out her secret. She didn’t want any one to find out that she was immortal.
Not only that. Modern times demanded that she have a last name. In Egypt, she didn’t have a last name. She had a title. Sarai, the wife of Tet and daughter of Naut.
“Ok class. Settle down,” Mr. Michi stood in the front of the room. All eyes were on him, “We’re going to start a new project today. So, everyone find a partner to work with.”
People shifted around, asking others to work with them. When just about everyone found someone, Mr. Michi said, “Raise your hand if you don’t have a partner.” 3 people complied with his request.
“Ok…Mr. Hano, you’ll be with Mr. Akyota when he gets back…and Miss O’Reilly, you’ll be with Miss Yamaguchi. Now, everyone sit with your partners and when you get the paper I’m about to hand out, get to work.” He started handing out some papers to each group and the class started talking.
“Are you Miss Yamaguchi?”
“Huh?” There was a girl standing by Sarai’s desk. She had orange hair and wore a pinkish purple bandana. She was about Tea’s height and just as pale. Maybe a bit taller.
“Are you Miss Yamaguchi?” she repeated. Sarai nodded.
“Yeah…you must be Miss O’Reilly.”
“Call me Heather.” The girl pulled a seat to the desk.
“I’m Mariette.”
The teacher set a couple papers on the desk and walked off. Both girls read their assignment. They had to write a paper about a big company. What they do, the history of it, what it has become, and so on so forth…
“You have any ideas?” Sarai asked.
Heather shook her head, “There’s so many…Sony, Panasonic, Dell, Intel…”
For the rest of class they wrote down ideas. Sometimes they would get off topic and talk about something else until they remembered that they still had to work. When the bell rang, Sarai went to her next class. She didn’t see Heather again till lunch, where they chatted and ate. After lunch, she saw her in the last class and again after school. Heather caught up with Sarai and walked with her.
“Hi again!” She greeted her, “So…how was your first day at Domino High? Make lots of friends?”
“Not really, just you. People are territorial here.” It was true. Someone spazed when Sarai sat in “their” seat in Science. It looked like they were going to rip her head off. The memory made her smile, “Anyway, what are we going to do for our project?”
“I don’t know…” Heather sighed then asked, “Where do you live?”
“The apartment building on Teardrop Drive.”
“I live a block from there. Maybe you can come over and we’ll find something.”
“Sorry. I’m still unpacking.” Sarai dreaded the thought.
“I could come over and help. We can talk about which company to work on while unpacking.” Heather said.
Sarai thought about it. She needed the help and it would be nice to have someone to talk to, “Sure, how about around 5:00?”
“Alright, what’s your apartment number?”
“154.”
“154? Ok, see ya there! Bye!” Heather waved and started jogging away.
It was then that Sarai noticed that she was standing in front of her building. She walked in and pushed the up arrow. The meter above it read the floor numbers. 5…4…3…2…Bing! The doors opened. She got in and pushed the 5th floor button. The doors started to close when someone stuck their hand in between the doors. They opened again. A blonde boy stepped in and noticed that the 5th floor button was already lit up. He was the same height as Sarai and wore the Domino High school uniform.
…2…3…4…Bing! Both got off. The blonde boy headed down the same hall she needed to go. Their steps were uneven sounding as it echoed down to the elevator. The boy suddenly stopped and turned around on his heel. Sarai ran into him.
“Why are ya followin’ me?” He asked. It was a ridicules question.
“Why are you in my way?”
“Huh?”
“I live here too you know.”
“Oh…” He kept on walking and she kept on following. He stopped again but she didn’t run into him this time. She was at her room. He smiled, “I get now! You’re my new neighbor!”
“Yeah,” She decided to introduce herself…again, “I’m Mariette.”
“Joey the name! Good ta meet ya!”
“Ok…bye.” Sarai entered her room and locked the door. He scared her.
Heather came at 5:00 and they unpacked for three hours. Then they took a break and sat outside. They were too tired to move. It was dark out but it was still fairly warm. The lights from the buildings below twinkled different colors. Everything was silent.
“Hey!” Heather said suddenly, jumping out of her seat, “Let’s do our project on KaibaCorp.”
